Peptide Drug Delivery

Peptides are now being explored as diagnostic equipment in addition to being utilised as medications to treat a variety of medical diseases. Peptides have lately been used for therapeutics to target medication molecules to particular types of cells (such as immune cells, cancer cells), therefore reducing the adverse effects of the medicines. To deliver the treatment to the target cells (in this example, cancer cells), which express greater levels of a particular receptor that detects the carrier peptide, the drug is in this case coupled to the carrier peptide. As a consequence, the medicine targets the damaged cells it is meant to treat without harming healthy cells. Additionally, peptides are being created to facilitate medication transport across the blood-brain barrier and intestinal mucosa barrier (IMB). These peptides enhance drug transport via the IMB and BBB via the paracellular routes and were generated from intercellular junction proteins such occludins, claudins, and cadherins. In order to improve the porosity of the paracellular pathways of the barriers, it is theorised that the peptides affect protein-protein interactions in the intercellular junctions of the IMB and BBB. It has been demonstrated that these modulator peptides improve the transport of big proteins like 65 kDa albumin as well as tiny molecules and medium-sized peptides to the brain. This technique may enhance the transport of therapeutic and diagnostic peptides and proteins to the brain in the future.
