Bioprocess Engineering, also recognized as biochemical engineering, is a specialized field within chemical or biological engineering. Its primary objective is the design and enhancement of equipment and processes for producing a diverse range of products—ranging from agriculture, food, and pharmaceuticals to nutraceuticals, chemicals, polymers, and paper—all derived from biological materials. This field also extends its purview to wastewater treatment. It spans from designing and analyzing bioreactors, considering operational modes, instrumentation, and physical layouts, to developing kinetic models. Additionally, bioprocess engineering delves into the study of diverse biotechnological processes used in industries, particularly focusing on large-scale production of biological products to optimize yield and improve end product quality. Collaborations with mechanical, electrical, and industrial engineers are commonplace, collaborating with engineers from different disciplines, bioprocess engineering amalgamates expertise to optimize processes involving living cells or their subcomponents, contributing significantly to sustainable and efficient production methods.
