Title : Integrating sudanese medicinal plants into modern pharmaceutics: A sustainable approach to drug discovery and formulation

Abstract:

Background: Sudan is among the richest African countries in plant diversity, hosting thousands of flowering species used for centuries in traditional medicine to treat a wide range of ailments. Despite this extensive biodiversity and deep ethnopharmacological heritage, the pharmaceutical utilization of Sudanese medicinal plants remains limited due to insufficient scientific standardization, analytical validation, and industrial-scale formulation. Integrating traditional knowledge with modern pharmaceutical sciences presents a promising opportunity for developing safe, effective, and sustainable therapeutic products.

Aim: This review aims to explore the potential of Sudanese medicinal plants as sustainable sources for modern drug discovery and pharmaceutical formulation, highlighting scientific advances, analytical techniques, and formulation technologies that support their integration into evidence-based pharmaceutics.

Methods: A comprehensive literature review was conducted using major scientific databases including PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar, focusing on studies published between 2000 and 2025. The analysis covered phytochemical profiling, pharmacological validation, extraction methods, formulation strategies, and regulatory frameworks relevant to the pharmaceutical development of Sudanese medicinal plants.

Results: A wide range of Sudanese medicinal plants demonstrate significant pharmacological potential, including antimicrobial, anticancer, antiviral, immunomodulatory, and dermatological activities, in addition to their promising roles in managing chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. Recent advances—including eco-friendly extraction methods, nanotechnology-based formulations, and analytical standardization—have improved bioavailability, stability, and quality control of plant-derived products. However, challenges remain regarding harmonized regulatory policies, quality assurance, and industrial scalability.

Conclusion: Integrating Sudanese medicinal plants into modern pharmaceutics provides a sustainable pathway toward innovation in drug development, economic empowerment, and healthcare resilience. Collaborative research, advanced formulation technologies, and unified regulatory frameworks are essential to transforming Sudan’s rich botanical heritage into globally competitive pharmaceutical products.
