Abstract:
Pharmacopollution is a public health and environmental outcome of some active pharmaceutical ingredients(API) and endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDC) dispersed through water and/or soil. Its most important sources are the pharmaceutical industry, healthcare facilities (e.g., hospitals), livestock, aquaculture, and households (patient excretion and littering). The last source is the focus of this presentation. Household Waste Medicine is part of the emerging contaminants, such as steroid hormones, pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCP), industrial chemicals, and pesticides. The presentation shows the evolution in the number of scientific articles related to pharmaceutical pollution published between 2023 and 2025 on Researchgate, as well as conference papers on the subject, highlighting the growing interest in this topic. It will also present data on the volume of unused medicines collected through the Brazilian reverse logistics program for the years 2020 to 2023.
Biography:
Pereira Andre Luiz is a PhD Professor, researcher, and senior consultant in the management of artificial intelligence projects in healthcare; pharmaceutical pollution; drug delivery; public health; and public policy.Currently serves as AI Advisor, Professor, and Researcher at the Public Health School of the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Author of a project recognized by Google as one of the 321 industry leaders applying AI to create real-world solutions and featured in the Google Economic Impact Report Brazil 2024. The initiative developed an AI-powered Virtual Assistant to transform blood donor recruitment in Brazils public healthcare system (SUS). Among the Top 50 Future Leaders of the State of Minas Gerais award, FedEx Logistics Professional of the Year 2014, and the 9 Public Management Excellence Award. Coordinated the public policy for home pharmaceutical logistics from 2012 to 2014.Author of several articles (including A1 level) and books such as Reverse Logistics and Sustainability (Cengage Publishing) and Solid Waste Management and Administration An Overview in Minas Gerais (Lumen Juris). Peer reviewer for the Pan American Journal of Public Health, Environmental Science and Pollution Research, and Waste Management.He has worked with institutions such as the Technical University of Munich Germany (Seminars), Fundação Dom Cabral, UFMG, PUC-MINAS, Unimontes, the Public Health School of Minas Gerais (ESP-MG), FUMEC, Senac-MG, Newton Paiva, Canal Minas Saúde, among others.Holds a PhD in Environmental Sanitation, Environment, and Water Resources Engineering (CAPES level 7), a Masters in Reverse Logistics Management, an MBA in Hospital Administration, a specialization in healthcare services accreditation, a Bachelors degree in Administration, and is a Software Engineer with a focus on Artificial Intelligence.
