Title : Detoxifying activity of Olea europaea L. leaves aqueous extract in lead poisoned rabbits.
The objective of this study was to evaluate preventive effects of Olea europaea L. leaves aqueous extract on subacute intoxication by lead acetate. Three groups of male rabbits were formed: a negative control, a group intoxicated with lead acetate at a dose of 20 mg / kg and another intoxicated like the preceding group by lead acetate and treated with the aqueous extract of olive leaves at a dose of 1.5 ml / kg (7/7 days) orally for 28 days. The results showed that lead acetate induced hematotoxicity in the form of normocytic normochromic anemia. Lead has also caused an increase in serum levels of some biochemical parameters (creatinine, cholesterol as well as transaminases) and a decrease in urea. Treatment with the aqueous extract of olive leaves has restored most of the altered biochemical parameters. The study concludes that olive leaves can be used to reduce the toxic effects of lead.
